FAVOURITE PEOPLE: Andri Benson, Always Andri Wedding Design

I first came across Andri when I saw a feature about her in a magazine (to be honest I can’t remember which one now but it was enough to make me interested in what she did). I had not long started photographing weddings and thought it would be great to get in touch with a planner whos work I admired.

Not long after we first chatted I realised that Andri lived only about 10 minutes away, we met for coffee and that was the start of it! Last year we worked together on a styled shoot and I can honestly say she was a complete pleasure to work with. Organised, efficient, friendly and such an amazing eye for detail and creative ideas. The shoot was so much fun and I can’t wait to get the chance to work with her again. Some of the shots we created are highlighted below. Before we get to that here is the lady herself with a bit more about her business and how it all began…

I initially trained in theatre design at the Nottingham Trent University before going on to do a post-grad at drama school, where I met my husband. After three years freelancing as a theatre designer, I got married and considered changing career into wedding and events, since there were obvious parallels between designing a stage show and a wedding. The sense of spectacle is inherent in both!

At the time however, I was working for the BBC Costume Store  as head of the costume department responsible for uniforms, bridal wear and jewellery. I absolutely loved working with the uniforms as the briefs were so specific and required a good deal of research.

In their ultimate wisdom, the BBC shut down the costume department and in the face of redundancy I signed up for some skill-building outgoing workshops they organised, including how to become a sole trader. It was then I had the light bulb moment that inspired me to pursue my earlier ambition of taking a side step into weddings, so I underwent a wedding planning course with UKAWP and launched Always Andri in 2009.

I’m based in London, around the corner from Fiona it happens! I cover London and the southeast, including Surrey, Kent and Sussex but can travel further a field if necessary.

My focus is on a full wedding planning service, from extrapolating couples’ initial ideas to being there on the day to oversee the smooth running of their event. From choosing the venue to sorting out all of the paperwork, I offer an overseeing and supportive eye to every element of planning for the big day.

I also offer a bespoke partial planning service to give couples the option of having me come in at any point during their planning and an on-the-day coordination service. This is never really just one day’s work but does mean that once everything has been handed over to me in the weeks prior to the wedding then the couple can be a guest at their own wedding, safe in the knowledge that I’m on hand to look after everything.

I firmly believe that whilst most wedding planners offer similar services, we all have different strengths. I personally love the balance of design and creativity with the science of logistics, so I feel like I offer the best of both worlds. It’s very important to me that my couples enjoy the planning process as well which is why I endeavour to create a personal relationship with them and try to be as much of a calming influence as possible.

Below is a selection of photos that are from a styled shoot I worked with Andri on, as you will see her attention to detail is amazing.

{SNEAK PEEK} WEDDING: Carly & Russell, Crondon Park, Essex

When I loaded all my stuff into the car on the morning of Carly & Russells wedding I was fully expecting the day to continue being the rain filled wash out that it started as. So when the sun suddenly peaked out from behind a cloud and the rain stopped only minutes before Carly was due to leave the hotel it was one of those miraculous moments. It was the sign of how the day was going to go.

Here is a sneak peek of Carly & Russells amazing day…including The Take That Experience, which had all the ladies screaming and dancing, while the guys stood at the bar watching! Although they did actually manage to get Russell on the dance floor, which was apparently a great feat, so well done lads! Great fun.

Make sure you keep checking back for the rest of Carlys and Russells wedding, which will be on the blog soon

Thanks

FEATURED: Harpers Bazaar Australia

Morning, well its the 1st May and to be quite honest if you woke up this morning and thought it was still winter you wouldn’t be alone. But, I don’t want to dwell on that as today I’m rather excited that I have a couple of images featured in a post on the Harpers Bazaar Australia blog. The lovely Hannah of luxury online wedding directory The Ebury Collection has put together a fab post for the blog all about her favourite floral arrangements and she picked up a couple of my images from the Succulent Styled shoot I did with Liz of Blue Sky Flowers and Helen of Helen Carter Weddings.

Thanks to Hannah for picking some of my photos. The Succulent Styled Shoot is also featuring in the current (May/June) issue Wedding Flowers Magazine and I will be doing a post all about that later this week.

Have a lovely day and hope you stay dry

THE OXFAM WEDDING AUCTION: wedding loveliness while supporting charity

Today I am really pleased to be able to post about a charity event I am a part of and whole heartedly supporting. A while back I found out about the Oxfam Wedding Auction and knew I wanted to be a part of it and help out by offering my wedding services to raise some money for a great cause.

The auction, running via ebay, started on the 29th April and ends on the 9th May. AAll the proceeds will go to Oxfam Unwrapped’s emergency work in poor countries around the world. So winning an item doesn’t just mean getting an extra special something for your perfect day, you’ll also be giving people the support they need to re-build their lives. The funds raised go to Oxfams humanitarian category; providing help and relief for people in emergency situations – for example it could be pay for water, feeding packs, soap, blankets and the people on the ground who organise and distribute them.

There are some amazing suppliers offering great bids with everything from your flowers to your dress and all in between. What are you waiting for? Go and get your little bit of wedding loveliness by popping along to the Wedding Auction. Have fun and happy bidding.

HINTS & TIPS: capturing natural reactions

Most people don’t enjoy having their photo taken, and yet everyone reacts positively and loves photos that capture something of the essence of a moment. An image that shows the real person, not overly posed; a natural reaction. Capturing that emotion is not straightforward, especially when someone is aware that they are being photographed. Its one thing managing to grab an amazing photo of someone laughing, smiling or even crying, when they aren’t aware that image is being taken. Quite something else when you have a rather camera shy person stood in front of you! This is when its up to you, as the photographer, to gain that persons trust and help them relax in front of the camera. Here are some great ways to get those great ‘natural reactions’ with just a little assistance…

Reach out to the person & put your camera down
I know, the irony isnt lost, but just think of how much of a wall that camera can be, especially to someone a bit uncomfortable about having a photo taken. Its a great black lump that stops your rather nervous model from seeing your eyes and connecting with you. Im not suggesting packing the camera away, but lower it a bit every now and again. Have a conversation, ask questions and find out about what makes the person you are photographing tick. Once they trust you and have connected with you a little they will relax. Once they have relaxed you will start to see the real person, and while you are chatting you can start taking a few pictures. The conversation will make them more animated and you can begin to capture some real reactions and show their personality.

Keep taking photos
Once you have put the person at ease then take the time to take a few more photos than you think you might want or need. As with any new situation, most people take a little while to get into the swing of it so keep taking those shots. Make sure you try a few different angles and crops. Most people have a ‘good side’ or a pose or position thats more flattering than others so try out some options. Don’t be afraid to direct them, after all they can’t see how they look through the camera.

Have a bit of fun, and be a little silly
You may find some people leap into the whole ‘photoshoot’ thing quicker than others. One way of figuring out the persons comfort level is to have a little fun and get them to play around with different expressions. Can they be a bit silly, serious, sad or cheeky? (Feel free to join in and help them get into the swing of it!) This isn’t the be all or end all, as some people will immediately feel really self conscious, but at the very least they might start giggling at how silly they feel and you have immediately helped them relax and the ice is broken.

What happens in between the ‘shots’ is the key
These are the times when you can see the real person you are photographing. These moments are the ones that happen right after the shot that the person was waiting for. They relax, they stand or sit the way they would naturally and this can make for wonderful photos that reflect the true personality of your subject. What this means for the photographer is that you should be ready to shoot at all times. Be prepared, anticipate the unplanned and look for those perfect shots that capture your subjects natural reactions.

Do a bit of homework before the shoot
Its amazing how much you can find out about someone before the shoot by asking a few simple questions and chatting a little, even over email. The more you can find out before the easier it will be to get a feel for the person you are shooting and what makes them tick. It also means they will feel more comfortable with you as they will get to know you a bit through this process too. This can help you to work out what to say or do that will make them relax and allow you get those fab shots.

When it comes down to it, there are no hard and fast rules. Nothing is going to guarantee that you get that killer shot that just truely sums up the person you are shooting, but you can certainly help things slightly. Be yourself, be friendly and chatty and above all be ready, prepared and constantly watch whats happening because you never know when that perfect shot is going to happen.
